Today, I got to take part in my very-first wellness fair, at the fitness centre in my home town. The fair showcased everything health-related. From weight loss to massage and of course, mental health. It was a great experience. Those who came to my table appeared engaged and supportive I was happy with the response because the subject of mental illness isn’t always as well received. Honestly, I was in fear of being stigmatized the entire time.
This particular venue ended up being a great one to start out with, small and not tons and tons of people which made my time there more manageable. I am proud of myself for being able to participate. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get through the entire day, it proved to be too much but that’s not the point. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed that the environment eventually got the best of me, but I have to say that all and all, I consider it a personal success, a goal obtained and one step further down the road to mental wellness.
When it comes to mental health recovery, I think its fundamentally important to always measure what you can accomplish and not put too much emphasis on what your expectations were before making a go at healing. This may take off some of the pressure to perform at a level you may have once been used to and thus minimizing your disappointment in yourself. Remember, learning your tolerance is very much key to success.
